The Lotus Seed

The Lotus SeedThe Lotus Seed

By: Sherry Garland

A simple, easy to follow story told in lyrical, unrhymed verse of a Vietnamese girl who is forced to flee her homeland due to civil war and takes with her a lotus seed from the emperor’s garden. The little grows into a loving old lady and is devastated one day to discover her lotus seed has been stolen by her grandson. The grandson planted the seed, but can’t remember where he buried it. Until one day the lotus seed blooms into a beautiful pink flower. The next spring the grandmother gives each grandchild a seed to treasured and passed on. The lotus seed is a symbol of the grandmother’s homeland. Such a wonderful book dealing with a small portion of Vietnamese culture.
