The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper

by Phaedra Patrick

This charming, debut novel by Phaedra Patrick is perfect if you are looking for a quick and uplifting read. The protagonist of the novel, Arthur Pepper, is a recent widower who lives his life according to specific schedules since Miriam, his wife of more than 40 years, died a year ago.  He is somewhat estranged from his children and feels alone and defeated.  Everything changes when he finds a charm bracelet hidden in a boot while clearing out his wife’s things.  The bracelet leads him to discover the interesting life his wife led before she met him, which he knew nothing about.  Each charm represents something from her past and he discovers things that intrigue him, sadden him, and make him jealous.

Arthur Pepper, a pensioner who has never left England, finds himself meeting strange and fascinating people while he travels learning about his wife’s past.  Through the process, Arthur learns things about himself as well as his wife.  He begins to understand that while their life was in some ways ordinary compared to the life she had before, it was full of happiness.  Their quiet life together, and with their children, was what she desired most, more than any exotic adventure.   During his adventures, Arthur begins to open up to others, reconnect with his children, and start to live again.

This short novel is a great way to relax and wile away a few hours.  With humorous and outrageous details, it will lighten your day.  If this book sounds interesting, you might also like A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman.
