Staff Review: Batman: The Killing Joke

Alan Moore’s 1988 classic graphic novel starts with Batman visiting Arkham Asylum to see if the Joker and he can settle their differences before one finally kills the other. However, Batman soon finds out the Joker has escaped and is on the loose. The following story unfolds in two parts: An origin story of the Joker as a failed comedian trying to support his impoverished family by joining a heist, and his attempt to prove to Batman that everyone is just “One bad day” away from going insane after he kidnaps Commissioner Gordon and gravely injures Batgirl.
The author goes to great lengths to compare and contrast the personalities of Batman and the Joker, and explore the psychology of the characters. The art is exquisite, with each panel paying the utmost attention to every small detail. The ending of the story is ambiguous and leaves plenty of room for readers to form their own opinions on what happened.
