Fish Girl

Fish Girl

By: David Wiesenthal & Donna Jo Napoli

Neptune, God of the seas and storms, now lives on land and has opened “Ocean Wonders,” an aquarium with amazing underwater creatures. Among those creatures is Fish Girl, the last mermaid of her kind. Neptune hides Fish Girl for her own protection in his underwater paradise. He demands that she show just enough of herself to keep the customers happy and coming back but not so much that they will truly “see” her. He says that if the humans find her, they will do terrible experiments on her. But can she really believe him when he lies to her and hides who he truly is?

Three time Caldecott Medalist David Wiesner has illustrated this graphic novel beautifully. Donna Jo Napoli weaves a coming-of-age story about the loss of innocence and the dawning of independence. I loved it! This book is appropriate for ages 10 and up.
