Written by Lindsay Mattick and Illustrated by Sophie Blackall

Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear was the 2016 winner of the Caldecott Medal. This award is given to the most distinguished picture book from the previous year. This is the story of Harry Colebourn, a veterinarian and Winnie, the bear he adopts. Harry meets Winnie as he journeys across Canada to join the soldiers preparing to go fight in World War I. Winnie becomes a mascot for Harry’s troupe and even travels across the Atlantic Ocean with them. Winnie is not your average bear! He is excellent with people and very smart! Harry loves Winnie, but when his troupe is called to the front, he knows that he cannot bring a bear with him. He finds a new home for her at the London Zoo and she thrives there with all of the people. This is based upon a true story and launched the most famous bear in history. This lyrical tale is an excellent and informative read. It is a story you probably don’t know, but you definitely should!  Not to mention the pictures…they are stunning and are indeed worthy of the Caldecott Medal.
