Wonder Woman: The True Amazon

Wonder Woman is on top of the world right now. After a consistently excellent comic reboot in June of last year and a terrific film earlier this summer, Wonder Woman may be as popular now as she ever has been. So, Jill Thompson’s original graphic, Wonder Woman: The True Amazon, is out at the perfect time.
The character of Wonder Woman has been a staple of DC Comics since her introduction in 1941. In fact, some may say she is the anchor and strongest member of the superhero collective, Justice League. Like most comic book characters with decades of history, the origin of Wonder Woman has been told and retold several times over. Wonder Woman: The True Amazon approaches this origin story with some new angles.
This should not be discounted, however, as yet another origin story. This is unlike most other graphic novels or weekly comic series that may be familiar to a regular reader. This is a standalone story, meaning a person who is new to the character could jump into this book with no prior knowledge and have a great experience. Since it is standalone, it would be new and unique to someone who reads comics every week as well. It means there is not a continuation or crossover with other comic books. Instead, this is a nice taste of the character for casual or seasoned readers alike (especially if you have just seen the movie and are looking for something more).
Jill Thompson (who is also doing some fantastic work at Dark Horse Comics) does both the writing and the art for this tremendous graphic novel. While the story and the writing is fabulous, the art truly stands out in this book. Fully painted, it feels much more crafted than a typical comic. Each panel feels like an individual work of art. As a result of her work, she was granted the Eisner Award for best new graphic novel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (although this was not her first Eisner).
If you are a fan of comic books and their exciting characters, this will definitely be of interest. Or if you are new to the art and stories graphic novels, this would be a good place to start. Either way you should not miss picking up Wonder Woman: The True Amazon. This summer’s movie may have established a new generation of fans. With this story, any fan will be able to enjoy Diana, the princess of the Amazons.
